About pocket power

Pocket Power is a social enterprise on a mission to put money back in people’s pockets.
We provide a free phone service to help people switch to cheaper deals and apply for discounts for their household bills.

Our purpose

Every month, there are 5 million people in the UK, who have only £10 left over after paying all their essential costs.
That’s 1 in 10 people in our society who are struggling to make ends meet.

And people on lower incomes spend around a quarter of monthly earnings on household bills such as energy, water, broadband and council tax.
Despite this only 1 in 5 of us have switched energy suppliers in the last 12 months.

At Pocket Power, we believe that nobody should be left with just £10 at the end of the month.
Our service is designed to help people who need support the most to save on their bills and gain greater financial security.

Our service

We partner with housing associations to support their residents.
Staff at our partner organisations book their residents in for appointments with us.
We then call these residents and help them apply for discounts and switch their phone, broadband, water and energy bills.

We save people an average of £200-£300 in their first call.
We then follow up to help our customers apply for new discounts when they are announced or switch when their contracts run out.

How are we different?

Withour service we tackle the 3 key barriers people on lower incomes often face to switching:

More than 11 million people in the UK lack basic digital skills.
More than 42% of low income households don't have access to the internet (Department for Education, 2019).
As a phone service, we reach people who are excluded from using traditional online price comparison websites.

Most of us know we could be on cheaper deals if we shopped around but it takes time, particularly if you are not used to it.
30% of consumers don't look to switch their bills because they believe it will take up too much time (Money Supermarket, 2018).
That's why we help with all major household bills in one 30-60 minute call, carrying out switches there and then over the phone.

35% of people don't have confidence in the process of comparing and switching suppliers (OFGEM, 2018).
By working through partners like housing associations we build trust that allows us to support people to overcome these barriers.
We talk people through the switching process building their confidence to carry out switches on their own in future.

As a social enterprise we are committed to a set of responsible business practises

How do we make money?

We use an established model in the industry of earning commission from the suppliers we switch customers to.
Our call agents have no sight of the rate of commission so it does not influence their suggestions when switching customers.

Who do we work with

We are currently working with the following housing associations:

Pocket Power Privacy Policy

At Pocket Power we are committed to respecting and protecting your privacy.

This Privacy Policy explains the steps we take to ensure information about you is kept secure and confidential, and how we use any personal information collected from you through the use of either our phone service or website. Please do read it. We'll review this policy from time to time. If we make changes, we'll post the latest version here. This document was last updated on 17 November 2020. By using the Service you will be regarded as having read and accepted this statement.
Pocket Power is the data controller in relation to the Services and your personal data.

What personal information do we collect?

When you use our services, we have to collect, keep and share some personal data and we ask that you agree to that in line with this policy.

We will collect and process information that you provide us voluntarily, in order to provide our service. This might include personal details so that we can fill in forms online on your behalf, do a price comparison, sign you up to a contract with a supplier of services, or so we can correspond with you by email and phone.

This information you might provide us with includes full name and title, address, date of birth and contact details. Where suppliers request previous address history for credit checks, and bank sort code and account number in order to set up Direct Debits, we will ask you for this information.

For some products, you may need to provide us with certain special category data to allow us to understand what discounts you might be eligible for. This includes information about health (for a water or energy provider to assess whether you have any special requirements).

When you provide this information to us, we will ask for your consent to use your special category data in accordance with this privacy policy. If you do not consent to that use, you may not be able to proceed with your quote.

How do we use your personal information?

If you have requested to switch suppliers we will process your personal data to support that process; our lawful basis for processing your data is ‘performance of a contract’ with you. We are unable to provide our Service if you choose not to provide your data.

Your contact details are collected so that Pocket Power and your new supplier can contact you about your switch.

As part of our continued service and commitment to you, we may also contact you near the anniversary of when you switched suppliers through Pocket Power or when you told us a contract was due to run out. This is so that we can run price comparisons for you again, should you wish to switch suppliers, or to apply for any discounts that you may be eligible for or help you set up a savings account. We will use the information that we hold about you to search for quotes from the websites of our partners and us. You can opt-out of this at any time by email to info@pocket-power.co.uk

Processing is also carried out for the purpose of ‘legitimate interests’ pursued by us, or our agents and service providers, using the least amount of personal data necessary for the particular task.

Sharing your personal information

We provide your personal data to the suppliers whose products and services are listed on our websites and apps to help them provide quotes and to carry out your switch. When you buy products or services from these suppliers, their own privacy policies will apply to how they use your personal data. You can find these privacy policies on their websites. Before completing any transaction or switch, we recommend that you carefully review these policies in order to understand how that product supplier will use your data.

We will not rent, trade, or sell your data to others.

By using our Service you are also agreeing to the use of personal information by Pocket Power and regulatory/governing bodies for the purpose of compliance monitoring. If you enter a contest or another promotion, we will use the data so that we can administer the contest, or promotion, and notify any winners.

We do not carry out automated decision making.

We may use third-party Service Providers to monitor and analyse the use of our Service.

Storing your personal information

We store the information we collect from you on secure servers. We may transfer, store or process your personal information outside of the European Economic Area ("EEA"). The laws in some countries may not provide as much legal protection for your personal information as in the EEA.

By submitting your personal information, you agree to this transfer, storing or processing.

Transmission of information over the internet is not completely secure. Unfortunately, no website can guarantee complete security. However, we will do our best to protect your personal information, but we cannot guarantee its security and any transmission is at your own risk. Once we have received your personal information, we will use strict procedures and security features to try to prevent unauthorised access.

We keep your personal data for as long as is necessary for the purposes for which it is processed, or as required for legal reasons. These periods vary depending on why it was collected, or if we have a continuing legal basis to do so (such as to fulfil a contract between us, perform a service you requested or for our legitimate interests). We'll then either delete it or anonymise it so it doesn't identify you.

We care passionately about having a positive impact on our customers and as a socially-driven business, we also are equally passionate about our society, our environment and our staff. We have committed to providing the Living Wage to all staff, supporting diversity and inclusion in our workforce and providing opportunities for personal and professional development for all colleagues during their time within the organisation.

We are an equal opportunities employer and strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds and walks of life. We are determined to ensure that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, age, race, disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation, marital status, or is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justifiable.

The role

We are a startup social enterprise, looking for a call agent to join our hard-working team as we expand our service. This role is right at the heart of the organisation on the frontline of saving residents money everyday. Responsibilities include:
● Carrying out savings calls with customers
● Applying for discounts on customers’ behalf
● Helping customers switch providers using our switching technology
● Carrying out 3 way calls with customers and suppliers
● Managing your calendar of appointments
● Sending follow up emails and text messages to customers
N.B. We work remotely, so this is a home-based role.

Who we are looking for:
This post would be ideally suited to someone who has relevant experience and enjoys talking to people on the phone for the majority of the day. We strive to offer a great service to our customers both through our calls and follow up texts and emails so you will also need excellent oral and written communication skills and be a personable individual.

During the calls you will have to navigate between several different I.T. platforms and websites so will need to have good I.T. skills.

You will also be managing your own time throughout the day, balancing carrying out new calls, reorganising others and following up with customers over text and email so you will need strong time management and organisational skills.

We care about creating a supportive, positive team environment and have regular check-ins and brainstorming sessions about how to improve our service in which you will have the opportunity to shape the business going forward. In your day to day role you will need to be able to deal with periods of heavy workload, and stay motivated during the quieter periods. We are therefore looking for someone who is motivated, proactive, a self-starter.

Although we work with call scripts, no two calls are the same, and often you may need to think on your feet and be creative. You will also need to learn a lot about discounts and switching and be eager to continuously learn about the relevant sectors and useful information for us to pass on to customers.

Finally, helping people save money is incredibly rewarding! But you are likely to encounter customers facing difficult personal circumstances, so you will also need to be resilient and also empathetic and supportive and to be passionate about helping others. It also helps to have a good sense of humour!

Previous experience/Qualifications:
● At least 2 years experience in a call centre environment or a role where you are predominantly on the phone, preferably working on energy or bills support.
● At least a pass in GCSE Maths or equivalent or be able to demonstrate good numeracy skills.

What we are offering you:
● The chance to directly support those most in need in our society to create a better situation for themselves and the people around them
● To be a big part of a growing, dynamic social enterprise and have the opportunity to influence its future direction and impact
● 25 days paid holiday plus bank holidays (pro rata for part-time)
● All necessary equipment (laptop, headset etc.) will be provided

How to apply:
● Please complete the application form below, or at:
● The deadline for applications is midnight Sunday 17 October, although we may start interviewing candidates and fill the role before this date.
● Please note, at the time of starting employment, the successful candidate must have permission to work in the UK.
● No agencies please.
