Bed poverty is real

An article published this week (29th September 2023) laid bare the stark reality of bed poverty for children in the UK.

According to Barnado’s, 1 million children are either sleeping on the floor or sharing beds as parents struggle to afford food and energy, let alone new beds. The impact is real, leaving children tired, anxious and unable to concentrate at school.

There are some ways to help families struggling with bed poverty. We work with a number of Trust Funds who will replace broken beds (as well as broken white goods like ovens and fridges).

There are also some wonderful charities who offer bed poverty support:

  • Buttle UK - a support worker can apply for funds to buy a new bed for a child

  • Zarach - partners with schools to accept referrals for children who need a bed

  • Glasspool Trust - offers funds for new beds and accepts applications from registered support workers

  • Family Fund - accept direct applications and can provide essential furniture items for vulnerable children
