Below is a list of financial support available to pensioners, beyond major benefits like the State Pension and Personal Independence Payment.

We will update the list when we discover new opportunities, and we will continue to connect customers to as many of them as possible during our calls.

Support for older people

  • Council tax reduction:

    • Pensioners claiming the guarantee element of Pension Credit may get a full council tax discount.

    • Pensioners who don’t get the guarantee element of Pension Credit but who have a low income and less than £16,000 in savings may be eligible for a discount.

    • People living alone qualify for a 25% discount.

    • People who are disabled (or who live with someone who is disabled) and need to live in a larger property because of the disability (e.g. to accommodate a wheelchair) can have their bills reduced to the next lowest Council Tax band. Find our more here.

    • To apply for council tax reductions follow this link.

  • Free eye tests:

    • People aged 60 or over are eligible for a free eye test every 2 years. In addition, if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you can get a free annual eye test.

    • Anyone receiving the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit is also entitled to a voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses.

    • Specsavers provides a 20% discount on glasses priced at £69 or above for those over 60.

  • Free dental care:

    • People aged 60 and over living in Scotland and Wales are entitled to free NHS dental examinations.

    • In England and Northern Ireland, older people don’t qualify for free dental care due to age – but you may be eligible for reduced or free dental treatment if you or your partner receive certain benefits, such as the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit. Let the receptionist know what benefits you are claiming when booking an appointment to find out if you are eligible for free treatment.

  • Free prescriptions:

    • People aged 60 or over benefit from free prescriptions. People may be able to get free prescriptions earlier than this if you’re on benefits or you suffer from certain health conditions, including cancer, diabetes and epilepsy.

    • The NHS has a handy calculator to check what help you can get with prescriptions and other NHS costs.

  • Public transport discounts :

    • If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can apply for a free bus pass when you reach age 60.

    • In England, you need to wait until you reach state pension age, and need to apply via your local council.

    • Those living in London can travel free on buses, tubes and other transport when they are 60, but only within London. Apply here.

    • People aged over 60 can get 1/3rd off train tickets with a Senior Railcard which costs £30 a year.

  • Discounts on days out and shopping:

    • National Trust offer a 25% discount for people aged 60 and over if they’ve been members for at least three years.

    • Most cinemas offer screenings for older people for around £4.

    • Many museums and theatres also offer reduced priced tickets.

    • Iceland Supermarket offers 10% off every Tuesday for customers aged 60 and above.

    • Boots Advantage Card offers exclusive discounts for over 60s, including free eye tests, a 10% discount on glasses, and free hearing tests.

  • Other financial support:

    • Pension Credit is one of the most under-claimed and misunderstood benefits. For example, you can claim it even if you own your own home and have some savings in a pension. It is worth £3,900 a year on average – but could be worth much more to certain households – and also unlocks access to other benefits, such as the Winter Fuel Payment and help with NHS costs. We can support people to apply for Pension Credit - see more information here.

    • If you are a grandparent who helps care for a grandchild, you could be entitled to tax credits in the amount of £250 per year. You are eligible if you spend time each week caring for a grandchild under the age of 12. You can find out more information here, as well as eligibility criteria.

    • The Dogs Trust Membership offers half-price membership for over 60s, providing insurance and 24-hour veterinary advice.
